What is PhotoFit?

PhotoFit is a free browser-based tool that compresses and resizes photos to exact KB and pixel targets. Unlike generic image compressors, PhotoFit uses a binary-search algorithm that converges on your precise file-size limit — so if a government portal says 20–50 KB, PhotoFit hits that range, not a rough approximation.

Everything runs inside your browser using the HTML5 Canvas API. Your photo never leaves your device. There is no account, no server, and no cost — ever. It works on mobile and desktop equally well, making it ideal for last-minute exam registrations on your phone.

Compress photos for government exams

Indian government exam portals (NTA, UPSC, SSC, IBPS, RRB) have strict photo and signature file-size limits — typically 10–50 KB for photos and 4–30 KB for signatures. Uploading a file outside these limits causes immediate rejection. PhotoFit reads the exact limits for each exam and compresses your photo to within that range automatically.

Passport and visa photo requirements

Passport photo requirements vary significantly by country — the US uses a 2×2 inch (51×51 mm) square, Canada uses an unusually large 50×70 mm format, and Turkey uses 50×60 mm. PhotoFit has pre-loaded requirements for 30+ countries so you can resize and compress in one step. No glasses, white or light grey background, and correct KB — all handled automatically.

Compress image to specific KB

Need a photo at a specific file size? PhotoFit lets you type an exact KB target and compresses your image to within 15% of that size — usually hitting within 1–2 KB. Common targets include 20 KB (SSC, RRB portals), 50 KB (IBPS, SBI exams), 100 KB (UPSC, university admissions), and 200 KB (passport portals).

Frequently asked questions

How does PhotoFit compress an image to an exact KB size?

PhotoFit uses a binary-search algorithm over JPEG quality — iterating up to 22 times — to converge on a file size within your target range. Unlike sliders that guess, this method delivers a precise result every time.

Is my photo uploaded to any server?

No. PhotoFit processes all images entirely inside your browser using the HTML5 Canvas API. Your photo never leaves your device. There is no server, no cloud storage, and no upload.

Can I compress a PNG to a specific KB size?

PNG is lossless — it cannot be compressed the same way JPEG can. For precise KB control, PhotoFit outputs a JPEG. PNG output is available but file-size guarantees apply only to JPEG.

Does compressing reduce image dimensions?

Only if you use the Resize tab. The quick compress tool preserves original pixel dimensions and only adjusts quality. The Resize tab lets you set exact pixel dimensions and KB target simultaneously.

What is the minimum KB I can compress a photo to?

For a 1-megapixel photo, you can typically reach 15–20 KB before quality degrades severely. For very small targets PhotoFit gets as close as the image data allows.

Does PhotoFit work on mobile phones?

Yes. PhotoFit works on any modern browser including Chrome and Safari on Android and iOS. It is particularly useful for last-minute exam photo uploads on your phone.
